Grand Marais Lions Club member Walt Mianowski, left, kicked off the Lions’ annual broom and light bulb sale with a visit to Mayor Clark McElevey’s house in April 1967. Bernard Larsen, Lions’ campaign chairman, said the sales that year exceeded expectations – the Lions ran out of light bulbs and brooms after only a few hours and had to re-order more! Proceeds from the sales of the items were used for unspecified “charitable and worthy causes.”
