Historical Reflections

The North Star Timber Company inaugurated a new way of loading pulp barges in the Grand Marais harbor in September 1953. After construction of an 800-foot road on the old dock site and a 200-foot landing area, the boats were loaded directly from trucks. The new system is believed to be faster and more economical than the old system of “watering” the logs and loading from a raft.
