Historical Reflections

The Zimmerman brothers – Sam (left) and John – seem to be enjoying a joke at somebody’s expense as they talk over old times in this August 1960 photo taken during Fisherman’s Picnic. John, 83 but still on the job as a night watchman in Duluth, was invited to attend the Little Red School program at the Cook County Fair later in the year. He was one of the few remaining members of the Mayhew school, the first school in Grand Marais. In all, about 75 former students, teachers and superintendents attended the reunion during the September fair.
