Historical Reflections

The July 13, 1972 edition of the Cook County News-Herald featured the newly completed facelifting of the Grand Thrift Shop, one of several remodeling tasks undertaken by local merchants that summer. The building, which was situated between the Ben Franklin store and Massie Motors on First Avenue West, was renovated with a cedar shake shingle façade and wood siding, all painted and stained in shades of brown and gold. The structure was later used as a storage building by Joynes Department Store. Sadly, the building was razed in April 2013 due to its advanced state of deterioration.
