Historical Reflections

The winter of 1996 had plenty of cold weather, as evidenced by this photo of a bicyclist traveling across the frozen harbor in Grand Marais – on April 9! How cold was it? Nighttime lows in town between Jan. 25 and Feb. 4 were well below zero degrees every night except two, with the mercury bottoming out at 32 degrees below zero on Feb. 2. At Poplar Lake, the recorded low temperature that night was even lower – minus 42 degrees. Now that’s c-cold!
