The ice in the Grand Marais harbor was about 18 inches thick in February 1966, when a group of locals went out to cut some ice. Shown using ice tongs, from left, are Tom Eckel Jr., Tom Eckel Sr., and Dick Eckel on the truck. Alfred Fenstad is partly showing in the background. The ice cutting operation came to an end in mid-March, with the arrival of warmer temperatures.
