St. Olaf College students, church members and community members came together to build Trinity Lutheran Church in Hovland. This photo shows the work in progress in 1948. The large pine tree to the east of the foundation continued to grow beside the church building, but sadly toppled in October 2012. A church member attempted to count the tree rings—there were about 107. Duane and Virginia Johnson of Hovland carved what was left of the big pine into a beautiful rugged cross in the churchyard.
