This undated photo from the files of former News-Herald editor Ade Toftey shows first- and second-graders visiting the construction site where their new high school was being built, and was probably taken sometime in 1952. According to News-Herald accounts, bids for the new Grand Marais high school were opened Sept. 8, 1951, and low bids totaled $487,000 for a building including an auditorium and gymnasium. Architectural fees and equipment brought the project total to a little over $500,000, to be paid in part by a $300,000 bond issue that was approved by voters 632-616 in the fall of 1950. The new school opened its doors to students in January 1953.
