Historical Reflections

Tom Spitznagle, of Lutsen, shared this wonderful winter photo from his father, Joe Spitznagle’s collection of pictures of his Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC ) days. This photo, from 1936, is described as the big “snow cat.”

In the December 19, 1936 newsletter Camp Chips
from Hovland CCC Camp 722, Editor-in-chief Henry L. Brule encouraged the men of the camp to enjoy winter. In an editorial, he wrote, “Co. 722 is situated in a country where all types of winter sports are available. We have hills where toboggan slides and ski slides can be built. We also have lakes or places to make skating rinks, where hockey, skating, and broomball can be played. The boys in this camp should get out and enjoy all these winter sports for you may never have the opportunity to do so after you leave this camp. In order to put over a fine winter sports program, we must have the cooperation of the whole company. Let’s all get out and take advantage of our natural surroundings.” Do you have an old picture or a story from years gone by that you would like to share with
