Historical Reflections

“Going smelting” was a popular community event in the 1960s and 1970s. Dozens of people would gather at river mouths along the North Shore to net the tiny silver fish for smelt fries. The smelt population has declined significantly but many remember the heydays, such as these young men— Clifford Berglund (left) and Glenn Larsen. The photo was taken near the Devil Track River by Evelyn Larsen, circa 1960-61.
