Historical Reflections

Local service organizations over the years have purchased a number of toasters for use at the North Shore Nursing Home. Unfortunately, the toasters – even the four-piece models – haven’t held up very long. To remedy this situation, the American Legion and local VFW purchased an extra-heavy-duty commercial model at a cost of $238, “which is expected to keep the residents in toast for a long, long time,” according to the Dec. 1, 1977 News-Herald. Amanda Huttenhow of the nursing home, second from right, accepted the toaster from left, Jim Johnson, commander of the American Legion Post 413; Marian Hess, president of the American Legion Auxiliary; and George Forsberg, commander of the Gunflint VFW Post 1211.
