Chamber of Commerce President Bob Spry, left, Howard Joynes, center , and Lyle Saethre put up some of the new decorations in downtown Grand Marais in preparation for the 1977 holiday season. The decorations, along with strings of more than 400 lights and other festive items, were put up during the day Saturday, shortly before the winter’s first storm pounded the city. The Nov. 24, 1977 News-Herald noted that the decorations weathered the storm well, “which is more than can be said for some of the power lines in the city following Sunday’s big blow off the lake.” Waves of 25 feet on Lake Superior were reported by the Coast Guard, along with winds topping 75 mph; close to 2 inches of rain was measured, with a half-foot of snow falling at the northern end of the Gunflint Trail. This year’s holiday season kicks off with the annual tree-lighting in Harbor Park at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 28, followed by the parade at 5 p.m.
