Tom Spitznagle of Lutsen shared a wonderful collection of photos taken by his father, Joe Spitznagle, during his days at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Hovland, Camp #722. According to the Minnesota Historical Society, by the end of 1936 the Hovland Camp had invested 100,000 man-days of work in the Grand Portage State Forest. CCC crews constructed the Mount Maude fire tower, an 11-mile road to the Tom Lake Road; and a 12-acre tourist campground on the banks of the Flute Reed River. This photo shows one of the fleet of CCC trucks at Camp #722.
