Historical Reflections

The idea of a Wild Flower Sanctuary was suggested by Lucille Walker in October 1958. On June 30, 1959, the Grand Marais Garden Club accepted the offer of Mrs. Andrew Hedstrom Sr. for use of a plot of land five miles from Grand Marais on the Gunflint Trail just before it crosses the Devil Track River, by County Road 60. It was officially named Wild Flower Sanctuary on January 31, 1961. Volunteers have lovingly cared for the area, now owned by Chris Hegg, over the years. Through the summer, volunteers have met on the third Sunday of each month to clear paths, remove invasive species, and to keep the wildflower beds tidy. The September workday has been changed to Sunday, September 14. Anyone interested in preserving this scenic spot is invited to take part.
