Historical Reflections

A final photo for our series on Grand Portage settler, Peter Gagnon, originally from Quebec. According to Gagnon’s obituary, published in the June 20, 1935 Cook County News-Herald, Peter traveled miles over unbroken trails and glaring ice by dog sled to get supplies needed at the trading post he operated. His store was first on Grand Portage Island in Grand Portage Bay and later on the mainland. Many residents today still call the island, “Pete’s Island.”
