This photo of Ojibwe Elder Billy Blackwell was taken at the Grand Portage Traditional Powwow sometime in the late 1980s. Blackwell remembers that this photo was taken the year the grandstands were constructed. Blackwell has given numerous historical talks around the region and often offers an invocation or welcome—aaniin, bindigen—in Ojibwe at community events. The annual powwow will be held this weekend, Aug.9 and 10, at the Grand Portage Powwow grounds.
