Historical Reflections

How did the Grand Marais Lions Club promote the annual Lions’ Fisherman’s Picnic in 1968? By bringing a real lion to town, of course! Shown with Caesar in this July 25, 1968 front-page photo is his owner, Berkley Lewis, left, and Bruce Bradley. Caesar is only 10 months old, but eats five pounds of meat and dog food a day and weighs 140 pounds. He’ll weigh between 500 and 600 pounds when fully grown, but is not as dangerous as one would think – he has had his fangs cut and is declawed. Lewis said he bought the felis leo from a zoo when Caesar suffered paralysis of his hind legs. “He’s a house pet,” Lewis said, adding that Caesar lives in the basement but comes upstairs occasionally for some TV.
