Historical Reflections

With the Grand Marais Art Colony celebrating the Arts Festival last weekend and the Johnson Heritage Post preparing for a retrospective exhibit on Art Colony founder Birney Quick, it’s the perfect time to share this photo from Teresa Chmelik. The picture is from her parents’ photo collection of the time they spent in Grand Marais in 1952 -1953. The couple met as students at the Art Colony. Teresa’s mom, Ginny Pottsmith, is standing behind the driver. The picture shows an interesting mode of transportation for art students, who were heading to a painting location—with fishing poles in hand as well. The photo, for some reason, is labeled “Weed Buster.” Does anyone know why?
