In May 1957, this big log was part of Cook County’s tourism efforts. The caption notes: A few weeks ago, Alton Olsen, in charge of the “big tree project” set the tree in place on the concrete slab on the harbor front. There is a difference of opinion on just what is the best position for the tree to do the most good. Several of the Chamber of Commerce directors favor having the log laid down with a plaque attached telling its size and other interesting facts about it for a tourist attraction. The job to make the decision is now left to the park department.
