Historical Reflections

Even though the annual Lions Trout Derby was cancelled in the winter of 1969 due to poor ice conditions, local residents still had a chance to vie for some fine prizes during the weekend Winter Carnival in Grand Marais. Activities included dog sled races, snowmobile races, snowshoe races, a dance, curling bonspiel and of course, a fishing contest. A parade was also included in the original plans, but organizers cancelled it due to insufficient entries. Shown in this April 3, 1969 photo are the winners of various snowmobile races, which were held near the high school. From left are Ralph Larsen, Mark Johnson and Harley Toftey.
