Historical Reflections

In this Feb. 20, 1964 News-Herald photo, Mrs. Ray Cummings lines up a group of children as they enter the new Birch Grove School at Tofte during opening day, Feb. 10. The newspaper described the first day as an exciting one for both students and teachers and noted that Principal Virginia Wegsten also had her picture taken, but the photographer had “bad luck” with it, so it can’t be shown. Attention was also called to the boots being carried by the children, who put them in the cloak rooms.
