Historical Reflections

Dr. Sandy Stover catches a herring during one of the many fun events in Grand Marais at the “Dog Days II” Winter Carnival organized by the Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce Jan. 17-20, 1991 in conjunction with the Beargrease 500 Sled Dog Race. The carnival featured sled dogs, broomball, fish toss, raffles and snow sculptures. The Chamber advertised the event seen above as the “World Championship Winter Fish Toss” which was brought back by “popular demand from the Fisherman’s Picnic.” It is unknown who won the event, which, judging from the photo, was one of the more popular events of the weekend.
