Historical Reflections

As construction of improvements at the Ray Berglund State Wayside in Tofte are wrapping up, we thought it might be time to share this interesting item shared by John Allen of Schroeder, a nearby property owner. According to the Pioneer Press article, an act of the Minnesota Legislature gave the scenic North Shore its ninth state park/wayside in April 1951. That area is now known as the Ray Berglund State Park, a tract of about 35 acres including the mouth of the Onion River and 1,020 feet of Lake Superior frontage. The project was a tribute to the memory of Ray Berglund Sr., a St. Paul lumberman, sportsman and conservationist who died on Thanksgiving Day 1948 of injuries suffered in a fall.
