Historical Reflections

Gloria Martineau shared this wonderful old photo of her grandmother Elizabeth Anaquette Drouillard with her children Charles Drouillard and Carrie Perrault (right). Gloria said her grandmother was a full-blooded Chippewa, married to a fullblooded Frenchman. Her husband worked for the county and it was his job to make disbursements to the Chippewa people. Gloria recalls hearing that he was the first person in that job. Elizabeth Drouillard enjoyed smoking a pipe and unfortunately that led to her death. She was an invalid and one night she put the pipe in an ashtray in her bedroom where it caught the curtains on fire. Her daughter Carrie lived nearby and was able to pull her mother out of the burning house, but she died three days later.
