At the age of 5 years, in 1924, young Madeleine Cross, with family, including her mother (also named Madeleine) visited the North Shore. They traveled from Minneapolis by auto to Duluth and then boarded the steamship America, making stops in Lutsen, Grand Marais, Grand Portage, Isle Royale and Port Arthur.
