Historical Reflections

Minnesota Twins’ star Bob Allison had fans galore when he visited the Cathedral of the Pines on Caribou Lake in July 1965. Bob and his wife Betty were guests of the camp when they came to see their son Mark, 9, and nephew, Douglas, 9, who were among the 124 campers there for a week. The picture shows Jeff Mendenhall holding a “Welcome Betty and Bob” sign as other children stand by. The Allisons were met by a decorated tractor and driven between two lines of cheering campers holding welcome signs; the children then fell in behind the tractor to form a parade to the main camp. Bob, who was kept busy signing autographs, had recently been hit by a pitch on his right wrist; the bandage can be seen in the photo.
