Regarding last week’s Historical Reflections, all that was known about the young men in hockey gear was that the year was 1951 and some of them had “GMHS” (Grand Marais High School) pinneys on. One of those young men, Gary Nelson, stopped in at the Cook County News-Herald on March 8 and identified them all. They were (L-R) Fred Halvorson, Glen Jacobsen, Dick Mowan, Tommy Jackson, Gary Nelson, Mike Quaife, and Jimbo Hussey. Nelson said their skating rink, which he took care of for three years, was where the Grand Marais City Hall parking lot is, although it was bigger back then when the building was smaller. Former high school band teacher Harold Ikola started three different hockey teams and was their coach. Nelson talked fondly of a tournament in which they were able to participate in Canada. “We got our butts kicked, but it was fun to go up there,” he said. “We even played on an indoor rink—can you believe that?”
