Historical Reflections

Joe Spitznagle, the education advisor for Civilian Conservation Corps Camp 722 in the Hovland area, took this photo of the McFarland Road (now the Arrowhead Trail) in 1936. In a photo album of his CCC days, Joe wrote that this is “the road from Camp 722 to Portage Brook.” Enjoying winter was encouraged in an editorial in the camp newsletter, the 722 Camp Chips. The editorial states, “Co. 722 is situated in a country where all types of winter sports are available. We have hills where toboggan slides and ski slides can be built. We also have lakes or places to make skating rinks, where hockey, skating and broomball can be played. The boys in this camp should get out and enjoy all the winter sports for you may never have the opportunity to do so after you leave this camp.”
