Historical Reflections





With the initial Gichigami Express Sled Dog Race set to step off this week, we thought it would be a good idea to feature the first running of the Grand Portage Passage Sled Dog Race. Local musher Dennis LaBoda started the race’s inaugural running on Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999. LaBoda finished the 300-mile race in 8th place. The winner was Mitch Seavey.

A few people contacted the Cook County News-Herald to identify the two “unknown” basketball players in the December 1 Historical Reflections. Bobby Don Brazell and Bob Brock let us know that the young men in the photo were Roger Cook and John Meire. They are pictured with Coach Dale Hanson and Vikings Marshall Fenstad and Dean Nelson. Brock said, “I was a few years behind them in school, but remember them well! They had a pretty good team during those years.”
