Bob Olson of the Gunflint Trail brought this photo of “Lady of Brule Lake” into the Cook County Historical Society Museum. Bob took this photo on August 27, 1984. He recalls being impressed when he paddled by the large figure in the late 1960s. When he returned with his family in 1984, he was surprised by how much the statue had weathered. Since that time the statue has disappeared, but curiosity remains. Who built the “lady”? Who erected her on an island in Brule Lake? Bob has asked many people and theories range from the lady being constructed by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps to a private resort. Bob remembers that the statue appeared to be hollow, but was still heavy. Does anyone know who made the statue and how tall it actually was? And what happened to her? Bob Olson, museum volunteers and others would like to know the story. If you know, please contact Museum Director Carrie McHugh at (218) 387-2883 or history@boreal.org.
