This is the interior of the Kaffe Stuga in Grand Marais in the early 1950s. It was in the building that is now South of the Border Café and operated along with a Mobil gas station that eventually became Shold & Lovaas Mobil. (L-R) Mrs. Anna Hussey, Mrs. Ruth Gilbertson, and owners Freda and Andrew Shold. “Kaffe Stuga” means “little coffee house” in Swedish. As a young adult, Andrew Shold immigrated to Grand Marais from the Swedish province of Dalarna as his wife Freda’s parents had also done.
