This photo taken sometime in 1937 shows Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees at Hovland Camp 722. Tom Spitznagle of Tait Lake shared this photo taken by his father, Joe Spitznagle, who was an education advisor at the camp. According to Joe Spitznagle’s records, each enrollee was paid $35 a month. They worked on projects developed by the departments of Agriculture and the Interior. To learn more about the CCC camps in the region, visit the exhibit about the camps at the Cook County Historical Society Museum at 8 South Broadway in Grand Marais.
