News-Herald archive photo In light of all the recent discussion of biomass as a fuel source, the News-Herald thought it would be fun to take a look back at another fuel conversion—from coal to fuel oil. This 1950s era photo was captioned, “Paul Backlund, janitor at the elementary school here, hangs up his coal shovel after shoveling 2,500 tons (he kept count!) of coal. He claims he’ll have more time to devote to cleaning now that the furnace is converted to No. 5 oil heat.”
