At press time, the community—the North Shore and far beyond—is mourning the loss of one of Grand Marais’ community leaders. Howard Joynes, founder of Joynes Department Store and Ben Franklin in downtown Grand Marais, died on July 13, 2012. Howard and his wife Rosemary established the store on Wisconsin Street in 1941. For 71 years, Howard was there to welcome customers. This photo was taken as Howard unloaded boxes of Ty stuffed toys that were to be given away in celebration of Joynes Department Store's 64th anniversary in March 2005.
