Historical Reflections

Mark and Cathy Dobbelmann, former members of the Hovland community, shared another wonderful photo of the trip taken by Mark’s mother, Madeleine and her mother, also Madeleine, in 1924. This photo is of Mark’s grandmother Madeleine with Captain Smith of the Steamship America. The family traveled to Lutsen, Grand Marais, Port Arthur and Isle Royale. Madeleine was about 25 years old when the photo was taken. The dress she is wearing is handmade. Madeleine was raised in France and was a gifted seamstress. Sadly, Mark Dobbelmann said his mother told him that when Madeleine arrived in Minnesota, speaking no English, her new in-laws burned all of her clothing for fear of lice. Apparently, Mark said, they were not thrilled with their son bringing home a WWII bride.
