Historical Reflections

Before the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon began in 1980, there were a number of sled dog races in Cook County—many starting right in the City of Grand Marais. This photo shows energetic five-dog teams taking off from The Point in Grand Marais on February 9, 1978 in a fun run. The 2012 Beargrease Marathon has been cancelled due to lack of snow in the Duluth area, so the old Gunflint Mail Run is being revived. The approximately 100-mile 2012 Mail Run will start on Devil Track Lake at 4 p.m. on Monday, January 30. Mushers will travel from Devil Track to Trail Center where they will have a five-hour layover. The finish will be at Devil Track, probably before noon on Tuesday, January 31.

The Cook County News-Herald received two calls in response to our Historical Reflections question last week. Richard Fink called to say the picture is of the Hungry Jack Road, coming down the hill from Leo Lake. Because there are no power poles in the photo, Richard estimated that the Milford J. Humphrey photo was taken in about 1958. Penny Schuppel of Hovland also called to say that she and her husband, Jack, have a framed M.J. Humphrey print with the same view in the fall. It was a gift to Jack’s dad, Harold Schuppel, who worked for the DNR. It is annotated “fall 1952.”
