Historical Reflections

We saw you

Former News-Herald staffer Dick Gilbertsen shares another fun historical item with us this week. Gilbertsen, who worked at the Cook County News- Herald from 1948 – 2000, traveled to a Minnesota Editorial Association Conference with long-time editor Ade Toftey in March 1956. Association members were treated to a “get-together” hosted by the Minnesota Dairy Industries Committee. Gilbertsen is pictured with Toftey, enjoying a refreshing glass of milk.

The event, held at the Hotel Lowry in St. Paul in February, was featured in the St. Paul Pioneer Press in an interesting reader gimmick, which asked, “Are You In The $5 Circle?” Every Sunday, the Pioneer Press ran We Saw You picturing different events taking place around town. For the March 11, 1956 issue, the editorial association, with its milkdrinking editors, was on the page and News-Herald staffer Dick Gilbertsen was the man in the circle.

Of course the first question we asked was, “Did you get your $5?” Gilbertsen happily reported that the Pioneer-Press was true to its word. He contacted them to say he was “in the circle” and he received $5 in the mail!
