Historical Reflections

One of the most enjoyable things about the Cook County News-Herald’s 120th anniversary open house was the opportunity to visit with former News-Herald staffer Dick Gilbertsen. Dick shared this photo of himself with publisher John Blackwell. Dick began working as a “printers’ devil” in 1948. Blackwell is the man who gave the paper its current name, in 1907. Dick is the longest serving News-Herald employee, working at the paper from 1948 – 2000. Ade Toftey had the second longest tenure. Ade and his wife, Bertha, owned the paper from 1930 to 1971.
