On June 30, 2014 at 7:48 p.m., Cook County Law Enforcement received a 911 call from a woman who had driven from the Eagle Mountain parking lot to a location with cell phone signal. The woman reported that she and her mother, Helen Alleman, had been hiking with her brother, John Mark Alleman, 29, of St. Paul, when he began showing symptoms of dehydration on the Eagle Mountain trail. She said he was about one mile from the entry point.
Grand Marais First Responders, Cook County Ambulance, the Maple Hill Fire Department, U.S. Border Patrol, Cook County Sheriff deputies and Cook County Search & Rescue responded. Because of the difficult terrain, rescuers were unable to use all-terrain vehicles to reach the man. He was transported out in a rescue litter.
Responders realized his condition was critical and Lifelink Helicopter was called and mobilized, but was not used as Alleman perished while being carried out. He was officially pronounced dead at North Shore Hospital.
