The Cook County Highway Department received the County/ Municipal Rural State Aid Paving Award for the CSAH 2 (Sawbill Trail) paving project at the Minnesota Asphalt Paving Association’s (MAPA) Annual Paving Awards Banquet December 7 in Minneapolis.

Award criteria included rideability, joint construction, general appearance, project complexity and design compliance. The Sawbill Trail project received accolades for the road’s rideability and joints, especially given the size and complexity of the project: the contractor placed 34,465 tons of bituminous pavement on 8.44 miles in six paving days.

The County/Municipal Rural State Aid Paving Award is part of the Merit Award program begun by MAPA in 1962. Its goal is to promote quality construction by honoring the best construction projects in a number of categories each year.

Highway Engineer David Betts accepted the award, Cook County’s first, on behalf of the highway department.
