Highway 61 became impassable for over an hour on Thursday, April 10 when a creek near Outpost Motel in Colvill overflowed, carrying large chunks of ice and slush across the road.

In perhaps a harbinger of the coming spring thaw, a creek near Outpost Motel in Colvill broke loose at about 8:00 p.m. on April 10, flooding Highway 61 and carrying huge ice chunks. The water and ice blocked traffic for about an hour.

Nearby resident Jerry Hiniker said the heavy slush and ice was about a foot deep and covered about 150 feet of the roadway.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation was called out and a plow truck cleared the highway.

Minnesota State Patrol and Sheriff Deputies were paged to provide traffic control. The road was reopened for traffic about 9:00 p.m.

A similar incident occurred in Schroeder at about 2:30 p.m. State Patrol and the Schroeder Fire Department provided traffic control as MnDOT cleared the road and waded into the icy water to steam the culvert.
