The sounds of large machinery, excavators, dump trucks, belly loaders, large cats, and other road building equipment filled the downtown area on May 6, as the second phase of the two-year Highway 61 project got under way.
This week the Minnesota Control Agency (MPCA) will start a dig site on Highway 61 near 3rd Avenue West. That project is expected to take a month to a month and half to complete.
From early May to late June, work on Highway 61 will take place from 8th Avenue West to 3rd Avenue West on the south side of the road. From late June to early September the work on 8th Avenue West to 3rd Avenue West will shift to the north side of the highway. From early to late September, bump outs and other finishing work will occur over that same stretch of the highway.
All truck traffic has been rerouted onto County Road 7. A temporary stop signal is now active on 5th Avenue West and County Road 7.
In town, southbound vehicle traffic will be detoured on County Road 7 to 8th Avenue West; northbound traffic will take a detour on Wisconsin Street to Broadway Avenue.
All of the detours are causing increased vehicle traffic through town. Increased traffic on city streets means everyone must slow down and pay attention to the stop signs and obey the traffic laws. Watch out for kids on their skateboards, scooters, and bicycles too. Summer will bring more people and more vehicles to city streets; slow down and pay attention to the signs and the construction workers. The road crews are putting in long days and doing a great job. Let’s keep it a safe summer on the roads for everybody.
