A trip on Highway 61 to and from Duluth just got a little bit quicker now that the Minnesota Department of Transportation upped the speed limit from 55 to 60 mph.
New speed limit signs were posted just south of the Lafayette tunnel outside of Two Harbors all of the way to the Canadian border.
Crews from MnDOT began changing the signs on Highway 61 on November 12. Once the signs were up, the new speed limit went into effect.
There are two small stretches where the speed limit stayed 55 mph. One is from Schroeder to Tofte and the second is from Mineral Center Road to the Store Road in Grand Portage.
Speed limit changes have been occurring since 2014 when the Minnesota Legislature directed MnDOT to evaluate its two-lane, two-way 55 mph highways to determine whether speed limits could reasonably and safely be increased. The statewide study will end this year.
