Higher Ed study skills program begins Sept. 15




Cook County Higher Education is pleased to offer The Academic Warrior: Becoming a Purposeful Learner. This five-session program helps participants of all ages learn the characteristics, study skills and strategies of a successful student.

This interactive and engaging course is being taught by Dr. Robert Pratt, a retired education professor and college student counselor. Classes run from 4 to 6 p.m. at the North Shore Campus in Grand Marais. Participants can take one session or all five sessions. The cost per session is $15 each or $60 for all five. Pratt’s book, The Academic Warrior, will be available for sale at a student rate of $15 per copy.

The program consists of different modules, and participants may choose to participate in any number of the sessions:

. Sept. 15 – Becoming an Academic Warrior: Fire up your mind and learn new memory and information retention techniques.

. Sept. 22 – Power Reading and Note-taking: Read textbooks with a purpose and learn how to take effective notes.

. Sept. 29 Critical Thinking: The power of asking questions and learning to engage your brain.

. Oct. 6 – Time Management Equals Self-Management: Learn how to develop a time budgeting worksheet and make use of all your available study time.

. Oct. 13 – Tests As Opportunities: Learn the study, review and workout cycle and various test-taking tips and techniques.
