Herbert D. Hakes,
77, of Spirit Lake near Aitkin, died of Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin.
He was born March 3, 1934 at Aitkin, Minnesota, the son of Kenneth and Merry (Welton) Hakes. He moved with his family at a young age to Springfield, Minnesota where he grew up and attended schools, graduating from the Springfield High School in 1952.
He went to college at Iowa State and graduated with a BS degree in Dairy Industry in 1956. He married Shirley V. Bahn on September 9, 1956 at Springfield, Minnesota. He went to work for the Carnation Company and they made their home in Cedar Falls, Iowa and their daughter Sue was born there.
He then moved to Fairmont, Mn. and worked for the Nelson Ice Cream Company. While living in Fairmont, their son Bob was born. The Kemps Company bought out the Nelson Ice Cream Co. and in 1965 Herb was transferred to Winona, Mn. where son John was born.
Later in 1965 he transferred to Austin and worked there for Kemps from 1965 until 1990 when he was transferred to the Twin Cities, and they made their home in Plymouth, MN. In 1996 they retired to Spirit Lake near Aitkin. They had been coming to Spirit Lake since the early 1960s.
Herbert had most recently been a resident at the Aicota Assisted Living Center. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Aitkin. He served on church council, was a longtime choir member, had been active in the Jaycees, Elks, and Kiwanis Club. He had also been involved in Boy Scouts and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Sue Hakes and John Gorski of Grand Marais; sons and daughters-in-law Bob and Gretchen Hakes of Minneapolis; John and Jennifer Hakes of Shoreview; four grandchildren Meg, Chris, Ally, and Jake. He is also survived by four brothers and spouses Kenneth (Shirley) Hakes of Aitkin; Richard (LeeVae) Hakes of Aitkin; William (Carla) Hakes of Aitkin; Jim (Barb) Hakes of Deerwood; and nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special friends Deb and Gary Clark of Aitkin.
He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley in 2007, father Kenneth in 1991 and mother Merry in 2008.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Rev. Dorothy Sand officiating. Interment will be at the Diamond Lake Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church and continue until the time of service.
