Two recent graduating Cook County High School seniors, Robin Henrikson and Adam Dorr were named National Merit Scholarship finalists.
Each year approximately 1.6 million students are entered into the National Merit Scholarship program where they take the PSAT test. Of those students, 16,000 high school seniors advance to become semifinalists. Students are then chosen as National Merit Finalists if they meet the criteria for academic achievement, accomplishments, and extracurricular activities.
Henrickson and Dorr were also the Cook County Class of 2020 Valedictorian and Salutatorians.
Adam was also notified he was selected in the final 7,600 students who will receive a scholarship through the National Merit Scholarship program. Adam will be one of the few kids in the nation to receive a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship that will go towards his education at Hillsdale College in Michigan.
Adam is the son of Mitch and Sharon Dorr, Grand Marais.
Robin is the daughter of Peter and Amy Henrikson, Grand Marais.
Scholarship winners represent fewer than one percent of the initial pool of students who enter the scholarship program.
Students vying for a scholarship must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes an essay and information about their extracurricular achievements, awards, and leadership positions. Students also have to have an outstanding academic record.
This year the National Merit Scholarship program awarded $35 million in scholarships.
