William Hellner is currently attending Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan in the ROTC program. Hellner will be participating in the Army’s Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC)—also known as Operation Warrior Forge—this summer. This is the capstone exercise in becoming a U.S. Army lieutenant.
Upon his return to the University of Michigan, he will head into his senior year with a GPA of 4.0, which he has carried throughout his college career. Upon graduation, he will get his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
Will is the son of Glen and Kathy Hellner of Grand Marais. He is a 2010 graduate of Cook County High School. He is following the footsteps of his grandfather, retired Lieutenant Colonel Harry Hawkins – U.S. Army.
Hellner said he would like to thank all of the people who helped him grow and supported him in this community over the years. He said, “Special thanks go to Patty Nordahl, Jim Larsen, Billie Doucette, Kathryn Pedersen, Tom Christiansen, Dorie Carlson, Mr. McHugh, Lisa Foster and so many more. The future is very bright because you all took the time to help make it happen.”
