An early morning fire burned down Thelma Hedstrom’s Devil Track Lake home, but she and her daughter Jean and Jean’s husband, who were visiting, all got out okay.
The fire was reported to authorities at 5:15 a.m. on Sunday, October 14 by a neighbor who was awoken by a loud noise.
The neighbor could see a red glow coming up from behind the house near the area where the propane tank is located and called for help.
Responding to the fire were the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office, Grand Marais Fire Department and First Responders, Maple Hill Fire Department and STOP Team, along with the Lutsen Fire Department.
Even though the response time was quick—firefighters were on the scene 12 minutes after the first call for help went out, by the time they arrived the house and attached garage, which contained two vehicles, were fully engulfed in flames.
Following the fiery escape, as a precaution, Thelma, age , was taken to the hospital for a check-up and was released.
Just what caused the blaze is unknown at this time. The state fire marshal and Minnesota duty officer were notified and the fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause.
