Heart of the Continent Partnership meets in Grand Portage

The Heart of the Continent Partnership, a group “working together to sustain and celebrate the lakes, forests, and communities on the Ontario/Minnesota border” will be holding its next gathering in Grand Portage on July 29 -30. The meeting agenda includes a guest lecture with archeologist Doug Birk at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and a general meeting of the HOCP members from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday.

Birk is a veteran fur trade archeologist. He has a particular interest in the archeological signatures of historic portages in the boundary waters. Recently, he has worked on the Grand Portage, discovering many sites and uncovering how the portage was used. He is also completing a report for Grand Portage National Monument of the underwater archeological work at Fort Charlotte.

Following the Friday meeting, HOCP members will be heading from Grand Portage to Grand Marais to practice for the North Shore Dragon Boat Races in Grand Marais. The HOCP will be paddling in the races on Saturday, July 31.
