A head-on collision occurred on Highway 61 near mile marker 88, between Lutsen and Tofte, at 5:58 p.m. on Thursday, September 1. Anne C. Becker, 42, of Tofte was traveling west when she crossed over into the eastbound lane of Highway 61 in her red 2007 Chevy Silverado pick-up. Kelly Swearingen, 44, of Grand Marais, driving a black 2007 Chevy Silverado swerved into the westbound lane to avoid the oncoming vehicle. Becker returned to the westbound lane, hitting Swearingen’s pick-up head-on.
Riding with Swearingen was her son. All parties were transported to North Shore Hospital. Swearingen and her son were treated and released. Swearingen and her son were wearing seatbelts and the airbags in her vehicle deployed.
Becker was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. She was wearing a seatbelt and the airbags in the pick-up deployed. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, her injuries were serious but non-lifethreatening.
The incident is under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
